The Plot
To Be Wolves once again brings us back to the world of ancient Rome, where Priestess Pomponia continues to fulfill her duties as Chief Vestal Virgin. But she also faces new challenges as a growing contagion affects everyone’s lives. Over the years, Augustus’ authority over Rome has strengthened, but without an heir, he fears he would lose the support of his people. Being close to Augustus, Pomponia extends her support in times of crisis. Amidst the chaos, a nobleman enters the picture who will stop at nothing to attain his goals in his quest for vengeance.
My Thoughts
Just like the first book in The Vesta Shadows, the story of To Be Wolves is fast-paced. The politics of Rome, the constant battle for power, and the efforts to survive in a brutal world kept me hooked till the very end. The characters have become darker, and their actions are dangerously unpredictable. As I read the book, it was hard to tell who was going to turn against whom. Many new characters are also introduced who add a lot of thrill to the storyline. As for the mysterious nobleman, all I can say is that once he appears, every threat that Pomponia has encountered in the past will seem insignificant.
In this book, Pomponia has transformed into a total badass, which I absolutely loved. However, she does frequently find herself in a position where she has to make difficult choices in order to protect the Vestal Order and her loved ones. But those choices have repercussions that even the Chief Vestal cannot escape.
Overall, I think this book was truly fascinating, and after reading it, I have high hopes for the final book in this trilogy.
TW: animal abuse, death, physical and mental torture, slavery, violence, women abuse.
Note
I would recommend you learn about the Third Servile War before you read this book, as there will be some references to this historical event.
